FAD DIETS

Fad diets are everywhere, more and more people are turning to these sort of diets to a) have a quick fix in their busy lives, b) to try and look good, c) follow the Hollywood A-listers who seem to always put their figures/looks down to the latest fad diet- ‘possibly’ because they get loads of money to endorse the product.
However these diets seem bizarre (see below) and are only common (sometimes very common) for what is a short period of time and then someone somewhere finds a possible health-risk link to them. Even the longest serving of all Fad diets- the Atkins diet has been criticised recently and rightly too because it can cause long term health problems.
Below are some of the most common fad diets:
• Atkins diet- a diet that well over 20 million people followed is basically a high protein low carbohydrate fad diet based upon that too much carbs in the diet can have a negative effect on the body burning fat. The weight loss is evident initially but a lot of people put this down to a loss of water.
• Cabbage soup diet- This involves eating nothing but cabbage based soup for a week and one special treat per day be it a piece of fruit or a vegetable- they say that cabbage has magical slimming powers but it is probably down to water loss- people have complained about feeling unwell and ‘smelling bad’ after this diet.
• Grapefruit diet- coming off the back of a diet formulated in the 1930’s the grapefruit diet involves eating loads of grapefruit, with the following: black coffee, dry toast, eggs and maybe meat (depending on which diet you followed), it worked because the calories in this diet were about a third of what women and a quarter of what men should consume daily so again a lot of weight is lost initially- people found they just couldn’t stick to it because it didn’t give them full nutritional support.
These are the most popular fad diets although there are many more on the market, they all contain some diet myths we can clean up like.
• The detox diets will not just cause weight loss
but will banish cellulite.
• Poor digestion of food can cause weight gain.
• Protein foods and carbohydrate foods should not be eaten at the same time.
• It is carbs which are fattening and should be eliminated from the diet.
• Your blood group can dictate which foods you should/shouldn’t eat.

The British Nutrition Foundation believes there is no SCIENTIFIC proof to any of these diets working long term and anyone who wants to loose weight should aim to follow a nutritionally based low fat diet and exercise.
