Soap Opera Workout Plan

Q. Picture the scene, your favourite soap opera is about to start, you have a half hour to yourself maybe an hour if they show 2 in a row. What do you do?
A: I honestly think 90% of people would say that they will slouch into their Sofa or chair maybe with a cup of coffee and a cake and watch the programme not even moving for that full hour.

Result: - Calories Burnt= Minimal Calories Put On= 200+ (and that’s me being nice)

But it doesn’t have to be this way- these 5 quick fixes will make you burn more calories than you put on whilst watching T.V without ruining your enjoyment.

TIP 1: Dump the Cake and Coffee- Most people will comfort eat whilst watching T.V (FACT) but this is wrong, proper meals/times of meals will mean that you don’t snack between meals; also try and change the Coffee for another drink even tea, tea has slightly less calories and has been found to be better for you than coffee. Green tea is the best for you as it contains loads more anti-oxidants. If you must snack on something try snacking on a health bar (much better for you, half the calories and they now come in many varied and delicious flavours).

TIP 2: Floor it: - O.k so we have fixed the eating and drinking scenario but we are still slouched on the sofa, what can we do? Lie or sit on the floor instead of the sofa. Same time, same channel more calories burned and better for your posture. When you sit or lie on the floor you shift positions and fidget more often and research from the U.S has shown that this fidgeting can burn up to 300 extra calories per day.

TIP 3: Balls: - So you don’t like sitting/lying on the floor or you cant get down onto the floor; invest in a Swiss ball- these are relatively cheap, available from a whole range of places including stores like Argos and Boots and are great for calorie burning and for your posture. Just sitting on the ball whilst watching Television will help you by burning calories as you move around, and will help your posture as it encourages you to keep the natural curvature of your back and strengthen the core stomach muscles.

TIP 4: Is that all the Ball does? - In one word No, these are some exercises you can do with the ball-
SQUAT- place the ball in the small of your back and position yourself against he wall. Squat down slowly keeping your knees over your toes.
BACK EXTENSION- place your lower abdomen on the ball and straighten your legs behind you, put your fingertips by your temples and lift your chest off the ball, hold for a couple of seconds then lower yourself back down.
SWISS BALL WOODCHOP- start in a shoulder –width stance holding the ball in front of you. Bend down and touch the floor outside your right foot with the ball then stand up and rotate your body to bring the ball over your left shoulder. Do this 10 times for both sides.
THE PLANK: kneel in front of a Swiss ball and rest your forearms on it with your hands clasped together and your elbows touching each other, keep your feet together bring your knees off the ground so that your body forms a straight line from ankles to shoulders. Obviously there are loads more exercises you can do with a Swiss ball but these are 4 where you can still watch T.V whilst working out.

TIP 5: INVEST- Now I’m not talking hundreds of pounds buying fancy home workout gyms or cardiovascular machines that you can buy for your front room (however these are great if you can afford them) but rather invest in some sort of workout kit. Here are some ideas.
1) Swiss Ball- see TIP 4, around £10-£15
2) Reebok Step- these are basically multi-height steps that you can move around, ideal when watching a TV programme as stepping is a great cardio workout, be careful if you have bad knees though, this ideally can be done whilst holding a couple of light weights in both hands and performing dumb-bell curls. Price around £15-£20
3) Weights – as above you can buy hand weights from many stores, these are weighted differently usually according to colour. You can perform, bicep curls, tricep presses, dumbbell presses, lateral raises, deadlifts and many others with these weights (see workout area of site) to see how these are done. Price £5- £15
N/B you can use household objects such as bags of sugar 1kg e.t.c for weights but be careful items don’t fall apart or are unsafe to use.
4) Skipping Rope- if your front room is big enough and ceiling high enough, buy a skipping rope and burn fat away whilst watching television. Price under £10
5) Jogging on spot- the great alternative to sitting/standing still- even if you do this in the advertisement break you will still burn loads of calories. Price FREE

As with all aerobic exercise remember to stretch prior to and afterwards to keep muscles supple and to lessen the risk of an injury.

Well those are my 5 quick fixes- try them see how you get on and above all enjoy them safe in the knowledge that you will burning fat as well as enjoying your television time.
