A ‘primal’ diet is based on the foods that we evolved to eat. Foods that would have never been eaten by our ancient ancestors include grains, dairy products, refined sugar and vegetable oils. Basically, if you were living off the land, you would be eating fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs and nuts.
New research shows that this diet is good for weight loss, as well as enhancing wellbeing. The study researched people with heart disease and type 2 diabetes for 12 weeks, and compared them to another group who was eating a Mediterranean diet that included grains.
In the group eating the primal diet, glucose levels were found to drop by 26 per cent, while those eating the Mediterranean-inspired diet did not see any significant drop in blood sugar levels. The group eating the primal diet enjoyed an average weight loss circumference of 5.6 cm. The Mediterranean group saw an average weight loss reduction of only 3.3c.
